The quintessential American luxury barge—a rolling living room that defined “Caddy” for decades. But underneath that pillowy ride lurked an aluminum V8 that could either float you to 200,000 miles or lunch itself at 60,000.
The DeVille was a full-size, front-wheel-drive luxury sedan and coupe. It was built on the GM C-body platform (1980-1984) and later the K-body platform (1985-1993) and the G-body platform (1994-2005). Engines: 4.1L HT-4100 V8 (135 hp—1980-1984), 4.5L V8 (155 hp—1985-1989), 4.9L V8 (200 hp—1990-1993), or 4.6L Northstar V8 (275-300 hp—1994-2005). Transmissions: 4-speed auto (THM200-4R or 4T60E). It had a soft suspension, a quiet cabin, and a plush interior. The Northstar models had a digital instrument cluster, heated seats, and a Bose sound system.
The HT-4100 is legendary for all the wrong reasons—it's a time bomb. The aluminum block warps, head bolts strip, and the engine drinks oil. The 4.5L and 4.9L V8s are much better—they're reliable. The 4.6L Northstar (1994-1999) has head bolt issues—the threads pull out of the aluminum block. The 2000-2005 Northstar is better—it has longer, coarser bolts. The 4-speed auto is okay. The DeVille is a comfortable cruiser, but avoid the HT-4100 and early Northstar.
