The personal luxury coupe that defined style over substance. It's got the same Northstar demons as the Seville, but its sleek lines and digital dash make it a collector's dream—and a mechanic's paycheck.
The Eldorado was a personal luxury coupe. It went through three generations in this period. 10th gen (1980-1985) was front-drive on the GM E-body platform with a 4.1L HT-4100 V8 (135 hp) or 5.7L diesel V8 (105 hp). 11th gen (1986-1991) had a 4.1L HT-4100 (135 hp), 4.5L V8 (155 hp), or 4.9L V8 (200 hp). 12th gen (1992-2002) had a 4.6L Northstar V8 (295 hp) in the 1993-2002 models. Transmissions: 4-speed auto (THM200-4R or 4T60E). It had a digital instrument cluster, a Driver Information Center, and a plush interior.
The HT-4100 is a time bomb. The 4.5L and 4.9L V8s are much better. The early Northstar (1993-1999) has head bolt issues—the threads pull out of the aluminum block. The 2000-2002 Northstar is better. The 4-speed auto is okay. The Eldorado is a classic coupe, but avoid the HT-4100 and early Northstar.
