The American Mondeo—a world car that was a handling king. The SVT with the 2.5L Duratec V6 is a legitimate driver's car, but its dual-mass flywheel and water pump location make it a mechanic's nightmare.
This was the U.S. Mondeo—a world-car. Front-wheel-drive, unibody, independent front and rear suspension (multi-link rear). Base motor was the 2.0L Zetec 4-cylinder (130 hp); the SVT got the 2.5L Duratec V6—195 hp, variable intake runners, tuned exhaust, and a Getrag MTX-75 5-speed manual. 4-wheel disc brakes, 4-channel ABS.
The Zetec is a tank—timing chain, cast-iron block, aluminum head. The 2.5L Duratec is smooth but has a water pump driven by the timing chain—pain to replace. The MTX-75 is a great gearbox, but the cable-shifter mechanism gets sloppy. The SVT had a dual-mass flywheel that fails and costs a fortune. Rust is the issue—subframes rot out.
