The compact truck that went away and came back as a mid-sized beast. The old one was a simple, sturdy workhorse with the 2.3L Lima four-banger. The new one has a 2.3L EcoBoost and a 10-speed auto that's a massive upgrade. It's the small truck that does it all.
Compact (1983-2011) was body-on-frame, live rear axle, leaf springs, torsion-bar front suspension. Engines: 2.3L Lima 4-cylinder (90-100 hp), 2.9L Cologne V6 (140 hp), 4.0L Cologne V6 (160 hp), and the 4.0L SOHC V6 (207 hp in 2001-2011). The 2019+ mid-size Ranger is on the T6 global platform—2.3L EcoBoost I4 (270 hp, 310 lb-ft), 10-speed 10R80 auto, electronic-locking rear diff, and a fully-boxed frame.
The 2.3L Lima in the old Ranger is unkillable—it's a tractor motor, but it's slow. The 4.0L SOHC has timing chain issues—the cassettes break, and the chains slap the valve cover, causing rattling and eventual failure. The old 5-speed manual (M5OD-R1) is notchy but tough. The new 2019+ 2.3L EcoBoost is solid—same motor as the Mustang EcoBoost—and the 10R80 is strong. Overall, a reliable small truck.
