Ford Taurus Overview

About Ford Taurus

The car that saved Ford in the '80s and defined aero styling—then became a rental-fleet hero. The SHO with the Yamaha V8 is a legend; the later EcoBoost models are sleepers. The Vulcan V6 is unkillable; the internal water pump on the 3.5L is a time bomb.

Specs of Ford Taurus

The game-changer—aero styling, unibody, FWD. The 1st gen (1986-1991) had the 2.5L HSC 4-banger or the 3.0L Vulcan V6 (140 hp)—OHV, pushrod motor, cast-iron block. The SHO (Super High Output) from 1989-1995 had a Yamaha-built 3.0L or 3.2L DOHC V6—220 hp, variable intake runners, and an absolute screamer that revved to 7,000 rpm. Later gens (2008-2019) got the 3.5L Cyclone V6 (263 hp) and the 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 (365 hp) in the SHO—direct injection, variable cam timing, all-wheel-drive, 6-speed 6F50 automatic.

Reliability

Vulcan V6 is bulletproof—pushrod simplicity, lasts 300k. The 3.0L Yamaha SHO motor is a gem but has a timing belt that needs replacing every 60k or it'll snap and bend every valve. The 3.5L Cyclone is good, but the water pump is internal (driven by the timing chain)—if it fails, coolant dumps into the oil and you need a new engine. The 6F50 trans is stout if you service it every 30k miles.
