Ford F-150 Overview

About Ford F-150

The best-selling vehicle in America—period. From the '80s bullnose to the aluminum-bodied modern beasts, the F-150 is the backbone of the American workforce. The 4.9L I6 is unkillable; the 7.3L diesel is legendary; the 5.4L 3V is a cam-phaser nightmare; the Lightning is the future. Pick your poison.

Specs of Ford F-150

Body-on-frame, live rear axle (solid axle with leaf springs or coil springs on newer models). 7th gen “Bullnose” (1980-1986) had the 4.9L 300 cid inline-6 (the unkillable tractor motor), 5.0L Windsor V8, 5.8L Windsor, or 7.5L 460 V8. 4-speed manual with granny gear, or C6 3-speed auto. 8th gen “Bricknose” (1987-1991) got EFI on the 5.0L and 5.8L—150-200 hp. 9th gen “OBS” (1992-1996) added the 7.3L IDI (Indirect Injection) diesel V8—a Navistar motor, mechanical fuel injection, 190 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque—this thing runs on old motor oil and prayers. 10th gen (1997-2003) introduced the modular 4.6L and 5.4L Triton V8s—SOHC, 2-valve, 260 hp. 11th gen (2004-2008) had the 5.4L 3V (300 hp) but cam phaser issues. 12th gen (2009-2014) got the 6.2L Boss V8 (411 hp) in the Raptor—a cast-iron block, pushrod OHV motor with a forged crank. 13th gen (2015-2020) switched to an aluminum body—saved 700 lbs—and offered the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 (375-450 hp), 2.7L EcoBoost V6 (325 hp), 5.0L Coyote V8 (395 hp), and the 3.0L Power Stroke V6 diesel (250 hp). 14th gen (2021-2026) added the 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid (430 hp, 570 lb-ft) with a 47 hp electric motor integrated into the 10-speed 10R80 transmission, and the all-electric Lightning (2022-2025) with dual motors, 580 hp, 775 lb-ft, and a 131 kWh battery—230-320 miles range, 0-60 in under 4 seconds.

Reliability

4.9L 300 inline-6: Perfect engine. Cast-iron everything, forged crank, bulletproof. 500k miles easy.

5.0L Windsor (pushrod): Excellent—simple, cheap to rebuild, lasts forever.

7.3L IDI diesel: Indestructible—mechanical injection, no computers, starts in any weather. Glow plugs need replacing every 50k, but that's it.

5.4L 2V (1997-2003): Spark plugs blow out of the heads because there aren't enough threads—fix with a Time-Sert kit. Otherwise reliable.

5.4L 3V (2004-2008): Cam phaser rattle—the variable timing sprockets fail at 100k, need new timing chains, tensioners, and phasers. $2,500 repair.

6.2L Boss (2010-2014): A beast—simple pushrod, reliable, massive torque. Thirsty (10 mpg), but worth it.

3.5L EcoBoost (Gen 1, 2011-2016): Cam phasers fail (same as 5.4L), timing chains stretch, and the internal water pump fails. Gen 2 (2017+) fixed most issues—dual injection (port + direct), stronger chains.

5.0L Coyote (2011+): Excellent—reliable, makes great power, but has oil consumption on Gen 3 (2018-2020) due to new cylinder-coating tech.

10R80 Transmission (2017+): Good but clunky in 1-2-3 shifts. Software updates help. Fluid changes every 30k if you tow.

Lightning EV: Drivetrain is solid, but cold weather kills range (30% loss).
