Ford Escort Overview

About Ford Escort

The best-selling American car of the 1980s—a front-drive compact that was part Ford, part Mazda. It was slow, it was cheap, and it was everywhere. The ZX2 sport coupe gave it a pulse, but the real gem is the 1.9L CVH engine that just won't die.

Specs of Ford Escort

This was Ford's global platform, but U.S.-spec cars got the 1.9L CVH (Compound Valve angle Hemispherical) four-cylinder—an SOHC motor with 88 hp in the early years, bumped to 110 hp with EFI later. Front-wheel-drive, 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic. The ZX2 (1999-2003) is a 2-door coupe with the 2.0L Zetec DOHC motor—130 hp, coil-on-plug ignition, and a twin-cam head that actually breathed.

Reliability

The 1.9L CVH is unkillable. It's slow, it's rough, but it'll do 250k miles on oil changes alone. The Zetec 2.0L is even better—timing chain (not a belt), forged crank, robust bottom end. The MTX-75 5-speed manual is excellent; the automatic (F-4EAT) is a Mazda unit that's meh. Rust is the #1 killer on these—rear strut towers and rockers rot out in the salt belt.
