The “upscale” compact that was really just a dressed-up Fairmont. It had V8 power, but smog-choked '70s emissions made it a wheezing mess. It's a cheap classic if you can handle the vacuum-hose nightmare under the hood.
This was Ford's “upscale” compact/mid-size. Body-on-frame construction—yeah, a car with a frame. RWD, solid rear axle, coil-spring front and rear. Engines ranged from the anemic 2.3L Lima to the 5.0L Windsor V8. The later 2nd gen (1977-1982) had a 4.2L V8 that was choked by smog gear and made maybe 90 hp.
Mechanically simple and robust. The 5.0L and C4 trans combo is bulletproof. The problem is the electrical system—early electronic ignition modules (Duraspark) fail without warning, and the carburetors are vacuum-hose nightmares. But if you throw a Holley 2-barrel and an HEI distributor on it, it's golden.
