The personal luxury coupe that went from V8 land-yacht to supercharged V6 German-fighter. The Super Coupe with the Eaton M90 blower is a cool piece of history—but it'll eat head gaskets for breakfast.
Personal luxury coupe, RWD on the Fox platform (1980-1988), then switched to the MN12 platform (1989-1997) with independent rear suspension. The Super Coupe (SC) got a 3.8L Eaton M90 supercharged V6—210 hp, intercooled, with a 5-speed manual or 4R70W auto. The later 4.6L Modular V8 (205 hp) in the LX was a SOHC 2-valve motor.
The 3.8L SC motor is a pain—head gaskets fail regularly (Ford used composite gaskets that couldn't handle the boost), and the supercharger snout bearing wears out. The MN12 IRS has bushings that disintegrate. The 4.6L V8 is reliable but gutless in this heavy car. Skip the SC unless you love wrenching.
