Ford Explorer Overview

About Ford Explorer

The SUV that changed America—from body-on-frame off-roader to unibody family hauler. The 5.0L V8 models are bulletproof; the 4.0L SOHC has timing chain issues; the 2011+ models have water pump failures. It's the family SUV that's had more recalls than a politician.

Specs of Ford Explorer

1st gen (1991-1994): Body-on-frame, TTB front suspension, rear leaf springs, 4.0L OHV V6 (155 hp)—pushrod Cologne motor, 4-speed A4LD automatic. Available as a 2-door Sport.

2nd gen (1995-2001): Control-arm front suspension (IFS), rear leaf springs, available 5.0L Windsor V8 (215 hp) with a 4R70W trans—this is a great combo.

3rd gen (2002-2005): Unibody (still called a truck, but it's a unibody with a rear subframe), independent rear suspension (IRS), 4.0L SOHC V6 (210 hp) or 4.6L SOHC V8 (239 hp).

4th gen (2006-2010): Same platform, updated 4.0L V6 or 4.6L V8 (292 hp with 3-valve heads).

5th gen (2011-2019): Front-wheel-drive-based unibody (transverse-engine), fully independent suspension, 3.5L Cyclone V6 (290 hp) or 2.0L EcoBoost I4 (240 hp), 6-speed 6F50 automatic. AWD was a Haldex system.

6th gen (2020-2026): Rear-wheel-drive-based unibody (longitudinal engine), 2.3L EcoBoost I4 (300 hp) or 3.0L EcoBoost V6 (400 hp in the ST), 10-speed 10R60 automatic, rear-biased AWD with a true rear diff.

Reliability

The 1st-gen 4.0L OHV is reliable but underpowered.

The 2nd-gen 5.0L and 4R70W is arguably the most reliable Explorer ever—it's the same drivetrain as the F-150 and Crown Vic.

The 4.0L SOHC (3rd and 4th gen) has timing chain cassette failures—the plastic guides break, chains slap, and it's a $2,500 job to replace them.

The 4.6L 3V in the 4th gen has cam phaser issues—same as the F-150.

The 5th-gen 3.5L Cyclone has the internal water pump issue—coolant leaks into the oil, kills the motor. The 2.0L EcoBoost has coolant intrusion issues.

The 6th-gen 2.3L and 3.0L are new—too early for long-term data, but the 10R60 is a lighter-duty version of the 10R80 and seems solid.
